How The Body Switches Between Fuel Sources
Carbohydrate and fat are used in proportions set by hormonal signals and supply, and the ability to shift between them is what metabolic flexibility describes.

The body runs on a mixture of carbohydrate and fat, with the proportions shifting continuously. What governs that shift is a set of hormonal and biochemical signals rather than conscious control.
The two fuels are handled differently
Carbohydrate is stored as glycogen in liver and muscle, and the total stored quantity is modest, sufficient for roughly a day of ordinary activity.
Fat is stored in adipose tissue in far larger quantities, holding many times more energy. It releases energy more slowly and requires oxygen throughout.
The difference in capacity and release rate is why the body defaults to fat at rest and shifts towards carbohydrate as intensity rises and speed of supply matters more.
Insulin sets the direction
Insulin rises after carbohydrate intake and signals that fuel is arriving. It promotes glucose uptake into tissues and simultaneously suppresses fat release from storage.
That suppression is the key coupling. When insulin is elevated, fat is largely unavailable as fuel, so the body uses the carbohydrate that is present.
As insulin falls between meals, fat release resumes and the mixture shifts back. The switch is therefore driven by the hormonal state rather than by depletion of one fuel.
Competition occurs inside the cell
Within muscle cells, the two fuels compete for entry into the same energy-producing pathway. Products of fat breakdown inhibit steps in glucose breakdown, and the reverse also occurs.
This reciprocal inhibition means the cell does not simply add fuels together. Increasing the availability of one reduces the use of the other.
The arrangement conserves the more limited store. Using fat when it is plentiful preserves glycogen for situations where rapid energy release is needed.
Exercise intensity moves the balance
At low intensity, energy demand is modest and largely met by fat oxidation, which supplies energy at a rate adequate for the work being done.
As intensity rises, demand exceeds what fat oxidation can supply, and the contribution from carbohydrate increases. Beyond a certain point carbohydrate dominates.
The intensity at which this crossover occurs varies between people and shifts with training, which is one of the more directly measurable aspects of metabolic adaptation.
Flexibility describes the switching itself
Metabolic flexibility refers to how readily the mixture shifts in response to changing supply, measured by comparing fuel use in fasted and fed states.
Reduced flexibility means the mixture changes less than expected, with the body continuing to use a similar blend regardless of what is available.
This pattern is observed alongside impaired insulin signalling, though whether it is cause or consequence is unresolved. Assessment of metabolic concerns belongs with a clinician using established testing.
