What Heart Rate Variability Actually Reflects
Variation in the gaps between heartbeats arises from competing nervous system inputs and breathing rhythm, which is why the metric is informative but easily misread.

Heart rate variability is among the most tracked metrics in self-quantification, and it is frequently described as a measure of stress or recovery. What it directly measures is narrower.
The heart's own rhythm is modified continuously
The heart generates its own beat through pacemaker cells that would fire at a steady rate in isolation. That intrinsic rate is faster than a typical resting heart rate.
Two branches of the autonomic nervous system continuously modify it. One branch accelerates the rate, and the other slows it, with the observed rate reflecting their balance.
The slowing branch acts quickly, adjusting within a beat or two, while the accelerating branch acts more slowly. This difference in speed is what makes beat-to-beat variation measurable.
Breathing drives much of the variation
Heart rate rises slightly during inhalation and falls during exhalation, a pattern arising from changes in pressure within the chest and from direct neural coupling.
This respiratory component accounts for a large share of short-term variability at rest. Breathing rate and depth therefore influence the measurement substantially.
Slow, deep breathing amplifies the swing and raises the recorded value. A reading taken during controlled breathing is not comparable to one taken during normal breathing.
The metric depends on how it is calculated
Several distinct calculations exist. Some summarise the average difference between successive intervals; others analyse the signal by frequency band.
These capture overlapping but different aspects, and they do not always move together. A device reporting variability is reporting one calculation, usually without naming it.
Values are not comparable across methods or devices. Comparing a personal figure against a published population range is unreliable unless both used the same calculation.
Context governs interpretation
Variability declines with age, differs between individuals by a wide margin, and shifts with body position, time of day, hydration and recent activity.
The spread between healthy individuals is wide enough that an absolute number tells you little. A person's own baseline and deviations from it carry more information.
Even then, a decline has many possible causes, including hard training, poor sleep, alcohol, illness or emotional strain. The metric registers that something changed without identifying what.
What the measurement supports
Used as a trend against personal history, variability is a reasonable general indicator of physiological load, which is why it appears in athletic monitoring.
Treating a single low reading as a verdict overreads it, since day-to-day fluctuation is large relative to the differences people attend to.
Persistent unexplained changes, particularly alongside symptoms, are a matter for clinical assessment. The metric is a prompt to ask a question rather than an answer to one.
