Why Attention Works By Filtering Rather Than Adding

Attention operates by suppressing competing signals rather than amplifying a chosen one, which explains why distraction is costly and why quiet environments help concentration.

Attention is commonly described as a resource that can be directed or depleted. The neural evidence points to a different arrangement, in which selection happens by suppression.

Sensory input arrives in excess

The nervous system receives far more information than can be processed to the level of conscious awareness. Reduction is therefore mandatory rather than optional.

The pathways carrying visual, auditory and bodily information converge on regions with limited processing capacity, creating a bottleneck.

Selection determines what passes that bottleneck. Because capacity is fixed, attending to one thing necessarily means not attending to others.

Competition happens between representations

When two stimuli fall within the region a group of neurons responds to, the response is not the sum of both. It resembles an average, as though the stimuli compete.

Attending to one of them shifts the response towards what that stimulus alone would produce. The attended item wins the competition rather than receiving extra amplification.

This is why attention is described as biased competition. The bias is applied to an ongoing contest rather than being a separate boost.

Suppression is measurable and specific

Activity corresponding to unattended stimuli decreases below the level seen when those stimuli appear alone, which is an active reduction rather than mere absence of enhancement.

The suppression is targeted, applying most strongly to items resembling what is being ignored, which indicates a filter tuned to specific features.

Failures of suppression, rather than failures of enhancement, correlate more closely with difficulty concentrating in laboratory measures.

Salient distractors bypass the filter

Certain stimuli capture attention regardless of intention, including sudden onsets, movement and anything carrying learned significance.

This capture operates faster than deliberate control, which is why a notification interrupts before any decision to attend has been made.

Removing such stimuli from the environment is effective for exactly this reason: it prevents the capture rather than requiring it to be overridden afterwards.

Internal distraction uses the same capacity

Thoughts unrelated to the current task compete for the same limited resources, and suppressing them engages similar mechanisms to suppressing external stimuli.

This explains why concerns that remain unresolved impair concentration. They persist as competing content requiring continuous suppression.

Persistent and disabling difficulty with attention has recognised clinical causes and is assessed by a qualified clinician rather than through environmental adjustment alone.
