Why Consumer DNA Diet Reports Overstate Their Evidence
Genotyping is technically accurate while the dietary interpretation rests on associations that frequently fail replication, and trials testing genotype-matched diets have not supported them.

Genetic diet reports pair a reliable laboratory measurement with an interpretation that is far less secure. Separating those two layers explains why the reports read more confidently than the evidence allows.
The measurement layer is sound
Consumer genotyping arrays test hundreds of thousands of predetermined positions in the genome, and their accuracy at those positions is high.
The technology does not read the whole genome, so it detects only variants it was designed to test. Rare variants are generally not covered.
Errors do occur at rare variants, where the algorithms assigning genotypes perform less reliably, which matters for reports emphasising uncommon findings.
The interpretation layer is the weak point
Turning a genotype into dietary guidance requires evidence that people with that genotype respond differently to a dietary change. This is a demanding requirement.
Most cited studies are associations between a variant and a measurement in one population, not tests of differential response to an intervention.
Association studies of this size have historically produced many findings that did not replicate, and a substantial share of the early nutrition-genetics literature falls into this category.
Trials testing the premise have not supported it
The premise can be tested directly by assigning people to diets that match or do not match their genotype and comparing outcomes.
Trials using this design for macronutrient distribution have generally found no meaningful difference between matched and unmatched assignments.
A negative result of this kind is stronger evidence than the associations supporting the reports, because it tests the actual claim being made.
Reports differ from one another
Sending the same sample to different companies can produce different dietary recommendations, since each uses its own selection of variants and its own interpretation rules.
Those rules are proprietary, so a consumer cannot examine which studies underpin a given recommendation or how conflicting findings were weighted.
Disagreement between providers analysing identical genetic data indicates the variation lies in interpretation rather than in the biology.
What genetic testing does support
Clinical genetic testing has established value for specific inherited conditions where a variant has a large, well-documented effect and a defined clinical response.
Those tests are ordered for a reason, interpreted by specialists, and confirmed by a second method before anything is acted on.
Consumer reports operate under none of those conditions. Findings that appear significant should be taken to a clinician for proper evaluation rather than acted on directly.
